In it’s a Shareable Life, we wrote a chapter on How to Learn to Farm an Travel through WWOOF-ing. But today, I want to talk about an experience I had with something like Willing Workers on Organic Farms, but without the live/work component – a simple volunteer farm day. I learned through a friend that there’s a thing called educational farms, which are supported by the government and corporations that show the process of organic farming through actually doing it.
Yesterday, I had the priviledge of doing this near my home in San Francisco – a little over an hour away in Pescadero, CA. While the work my friends and I did was nothing earth shattering (we picked grass/weeds), the experience as a whole was thought provoking. In addition to the farm visit and volunteer day, I had the opportunity to get a tour of the entire operation and learn exactly how organic farming works.
And you should too! So, I highly suggest having this experience – getting outside of your comfort zone, touching the ground and learning where your food comes from and how it’s made.
